Scientists find ordered magnetic patterns in disordered magnetic materials
A group of scientists working at the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) has demonstrated that a particular property known as "chirality" - which may be used to transmit and store data in new ways - nanometer-thick samples of multilayered materials with disordered structures.

Introduction and Application of Magnetic Components
Almost all power supply circuits are inseparable from the magnetic component inductor or transformer. For example, inductors are used at the input and output to filter out harmonics of the switching waveform; in resonant converters, inductors are used to resonate with capacitors to obtain sinusoidal voltages and currents; in buffer circuits, inductors are used to limit the rate of change of the current of the power device; in boost converters, energy is stored and transferred; and sometimes inductors are used to limit the transient current of the circuit, and so on. Transformers, on the other hand, are used to electrically isolate two systems from each other, to transform voltages or impedances, or to generate phase shifts (3-phase Δ-Y transformers), to store and transfer energy (flyback transformers), and to detect voltages and currents.
